Red Ballon
In red ballon we see a small boy running around a city while a red balloon is following him around. Throughout the film we see people attempting to get rid of the balloon, popping it or taking it from the boy. Other then a good way to use the new technology of color in film, I think the ballon is there to serve a deeper meaning.
In the film the balloon is just as attached to the boy as he is attached to it. It follows him around even when he sets it aside to go and do something. To me the ballon represents the boy childless. It is apart of him and he appreciates it, but at the same time he knows that it is not accepted. The film is trying to comment on the speed in which children are expected to grow up post world war. There are things that need to be done, and a continent that needs to be reborn after the events that recently occurred. Everyone tries to get rid of the ballon, or his childless, because he is expected to act older and contribute more to the society. All these people are representing society attempting to shake him of his childless. Eventually we see the balloon struck down by a child and popped. After that all the ballon from around Paris come to the boy and he flies away. I see this as his child hood ending and yet something new blossoms from it. Giving up his childhood he is then given more experiences represented by all the other colored balloons that Come to him from around the city. Him flying away is the movies way of showing transition into a new part of life.
As much as I searched for deeper meaning in the film, I must acknowledge that a portion of the film is there for flashy entertainment. The use of the colors, and the animation of the ballon, indicate to me that the film is looking to get some, oh wow, remarks from the audience. This was also hinted at in the review from the New York Times. As they said this film is for children, as well as about children. It is simple with only the boy and his balloon as characters. The film being for children its is necessary for the film to be lighthearted and fun. With all this in mind I do believe there is more buried in this film.

some more on the buried ideas--I think this is a good start:

With that in mind, it does seem the child/balloon seems more part of that new future than the churches/schools, right? is the child just a child or is he also somehow connected to others on the street? the same way the balloon is?
